Client: WellPoint, Richmond, VA
Project: ICD-10 Information
Management - EDWard
Role: Senior ETL Technical Lead/Architect
Period: Nov’2010 – Till Date
Client Summary: WellPoint is one of the nation’s largest health benefits companies
offering a broad range of medical and specialty products, with more than 36
million members in its affiliated health plans and nearly 67 million
individuals served through its subsidiaries. One in nine Americans receives
coverage for their medical care through WellPoint's affiliated plans.
Project Summary: ICD-10 Information Management project focuses on analysis and
remediation of the WellPoint’s Information Management data warehouses and
business applications by repointing any surviving and ICD-10 impacted asset
to the EDWard data warehouse (Enterprise Data Warehouse and Reporting Depot),
allowing for reduced costs, reduced remediation activities and increased
efficiency opportunities. WellPoint’s response to ICD-10 is to implement a
dual support strategy of accepting both ICD-9 and ICD-10s for an undefined
period of time. IM EDWard will support dual processing by sourcing and
storing both ICD-9 and ICD-10 based claims.
· Participate in evaluating & finalizing ICD-10 remediation strategy
based on business needs.
· Convert the remediation strategy into logical and physical data model
solutions.
· Data Profiling of Enterprise Data warehouse for critical repoint data
gaps and help document the profiling results and findings as part of
functional requirements
· Define & document the technical requirements corresponding to the
functional requirements

Project: EDL R1 to R2 EDW Redirection
Role: Senior ETL Technical
Lead
Period: Sep’2008 – Oct’2010
Project Summary: The Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDWard) project aims to source historic
and current data directly from WellPoint’s core systems and serve as the
enterprise’s active data warehouse. Core subject area data from operational
source systems WGS, CS90, STAR, FACETS, ACES and NASCO were addressed in
separate direct sourcing initiatives.
The new EDWard
content would not be complete without the additional EDL (Enterprise Data
Layer) R1 data (not currently sourced from direct sourcing initiative) thus
requiring dual maintenance on the physical structures, applications,
security, tracking of data integrity/enhancements requests, as well as the
complication of handling multiple model structures for data retrieval.
With the combination of this redirection project and the direct sourcing
initiatives, core subject area data will be available across the entire line
of business in one warehouse structure, minimizing the duration of dual
maintenance and support. EDL R1 to R2 EDW Redirection project aimed to
redirect components of the current EDL Release 1 (R1) data and data
population procedures to the Enterprise Data Warehouse (EDW) Release 2 (R2)
data model.
· Lead technical team of 5 onshore resources, planning, prioritizing,
tracking & reviewing of tasks with the team
· Work closely with Business and IT SMEs to gather and document the
functional requirements for the project.
· Formulate & document the technical requirements corresponding to
the functional requirements
· Plan & perform data profiling analysis to validate complex data
mapping rules and source data discrepancies
· Involve in analysis and design of logical & physical data model
for Health Risk Assessment subject area.
· Design the data flow architecture for both history & incremental
data requirements.
· Prepare Overall Technical Design Document & ETL Specifications.
· Perform Detail design, Coding & testing for critical requirements
· Review the detail design assigned to the team, suggest changes leading
to a better, fool proof design.
· Perform code review & performance tuning review of ETL code
components created by the team, and ensure all standards and guidelines are
met & data loads perform at optimum level.
· Co-ordinate with the testing team through all testing phases (SIT,
UAT, IR, Regression testing). Track the testing iterations, defects, triaging,
bug fixes, data reloads, retesting & defect closure.
· Estimate the Level of Effort for end to end development activities,
review with management and obtain approvals.
· Formulate & communicate to downstream systems/users, the release
information for each of the implementing releases of the project
· Ensure ETL guidelines are properly followed. Code review and
performance tuning review to ensure code is up to standards and performance
optimized.
· Track & Report status of all technical tasks to the project
manager on a periodic basis

Project: Membership to Consumer – Data Integration
Role: ETL Technical
Lead
Period: Oct’2007 – Aug’2008
Project Summary: WellPoint has been holding the Membership data in the enterprise data
warehouse (EDWard) on a daily basis (members enrolled from 2004 are captured
into EDWard). Since data warehouse has to integrate several
transactional/heterogeneous business systems data into it, source systems
like WGS, CS90 and STAR’s membership data has been integrated into EDWard on
an on-going basis. The purpose of this project is to integrate similar
members into a single group and assign them the Unique ID, which is known as
Consumer ID.
· Analyze the existing Lab Data Integration solution to arrive at the
final design for Consumer Integration.
· Build prototype on Teradata environment & showcase the % of
consumer derivation out of higher volume of members.
· Design the high level end to end ETL process for the identified
functional requirements.
· Task assignment of detailed design, coding and unit testing tasks to
team members and review.
· Build & Unit test ETL code components (Informatica mappings,
workflows, Teradata BTEQ scripts, Unix shell scripts).
· Code review to ensure coding standards and guidelines are adhered to.
· Performance tuning of badly performing queries in Teradata
environment.
· Support System Integration testing & User Acceptance testing –
conduct defect triage meetings, analyze testing observations, apply fixes for
defects & retest.
· Prepare and review the SDLC workbook & work closely with the
Database Administrator Group, Informatica Administrator Group, Clear Case
Admin to promote the code components to SIT, UAT & IR testing
environments and finally to Production.

Project: IM EDW – CS90 & WGS
Direct Sourcing
Role: ETL
Developer
Period: Jan’2005 – Sep’2007
Project Summary: Direct sourcing from the operational systems to EDW (Enterprise Data
Warehouse) will position EDW as an active data warehouse with the potential
to load data almost as fast as it is added or updated on the operational
system. The purpose of the IM EDW – CS90 & WGS Direct Sourcing project is
to develop a detailed approach for sourcing CS90 & WGS data directly to
the EDW base model. The subject areas include claims, membership, product,
provider & chart of account from January 2004 forward. The on-going plan
is to only load new or changed records to the EDW base model. This will
reduce the volume of data extracted and loaded which reduces any impacts on
the Information Consumers, applications, and processes using the operational
systems or the EDW base model data.
The data will be
moved to a pre-staging/Landing zone area “as-is” from the operational
systems, with a minimum of data standardization occurring during the extract.
The idea is to move the data as quickly as possible to avoid affecting the
processing or availability of the operational systems. The data would then be
mapped from the landing area to the base model for Operational reporting
elements defined by the BI strategy team.
· Data profiling analysis to help IT SMEs define the attribute
mapping/transformation rules.
· Proof of concept for Change Data Capture using a home grown method and
Informatica power exchange.
· Design & build mainframe extract processes to extract history
& on-going data from Mainframe IMS, DB2 & flat file sources
· Design the end to end ETL flow (both high level & detailed design)
for all membership tables.
· Prepare Technical Design Document & ETL Specifications.
· Build & Unit test ETL code components (Informatica mappings,
workflows, Teradata BTEQ scripts, Unix shell scripts).
· Code review to ensure coding standards and guidelines are adhered to.
· Performance tuning of badly performing queries in Teradata
environment.
· Support System Integration testing & User Acceptance testing –
conduct defect triage meetings, analyze testing observations, apply fixes for
defects & retest.
· Prepare and review the SDLC workbook used for code migration to all
testing environments and finally to Production.
· Work closely with the Database Administrator Group, Informatica
Administrator Group, Clear Case Admin to promote the code components to SIT,
UAT & IR testing environments and finally to Production.
· Post production monitoring and support.
